ISO 45001 for Garment and Textile Factories: Building a Safer Workplace

ISO Certification · 2026-08-27 · 2 min read · CR Global Assurance Editorial Team

Fire, electrical and structural safety programmes changed Bangladesh's garment industry. ISO 45001 turns those improvements into a management system that keeps working long after the last inspection.

ISO 45001 is the international standard for occupational health and safety management systems (OHSMS). In ready-made garment (RMG) and textile factories, it builds on fire, electrical and structural safety remediation by making hazard control part of everyday management. CR Global Assurance (formerly CR Team) audits and certifies ISO 45001 systems and runs ISO 45001 lead auditor courses.

Why ISO 45001 matters for RMG

Inspections fix specific hazards; a management system prevents new ones. ISO 45001 requires leadership commitment, worker consultation and participation, systematic hazard identification and continual improvement — the same elements buyers look for in social audits and SLCP verification.

Key requirements in a factory context

  • Worker participation — safety committees that actually meet, with worker representatives who raise issues.
  • Hazard identification — machinery guarding, needle and cutting injuries, chemical exposure in washing and dyeing, boiler and compressor safety, ergonomics and heat stress.
  • Legal requirements — compliance with national labour law and fire safety rules, tracked in a legal register.
  • Emergency preparedness — evacuation plans, drills, fire detection and suppression maintenance, and first aid.
  • Contractors and visitors — permit-to-work for hot work, electrical work and work at height.
  • Incident investigation — root-cause analysis and corrective action for accidents and near misses.

Certification steps

  1. Baseline gap analysis and hazard/risk register.
  2. OHS policy, objectives and consultation arrangements.
  3. Operational controls, training and emergency drills.
  4. Internal audit and management review.
  5. Stage 1 and Stage 2 certification audits.
  6. Annual surveillance audits.

Measuring OHS performance

Track leading indicators (training completed, inspections closed, near misses reported) as well as lagging ones (lost-time injuries). A rise in near-miss reporting is often a sign of a healthier safety culture, not a worse one. A workplace safety survey is a good way to hear what workers really think.

Frequently asked questions

What replaced OHSAS 18001?

ISO 45001 replaced OHSAS 18001 as the international standard for occupational health and safety management systems.

Is worker participation required by ISO 45001?

Yes. ISO 45001 explicitly requires consultation and participation of non-managerial workers in key OHS decisions.

Does CR Global Assurance provide ISO 45001 lead auditor training?

Yes. CR Global Assurance runs ISO 45001:2018 lead auditor courses as part of its training services.
